September, 2000
Every year the last weekend of September is the celebration of Deaf Awareness Day. The first-ever celebration in Cambodia of this special day for deaf people was this year. The events were organized by CDPO, the Cambodian Disabled People's Organization, working with the American Friends Service Committee, the Disability Action Council, Handicap International, Krousar Thmey, Maryknoll, and the National Center for Disabled People. The day began with a march through the streets of Phnom Penh to raise awareness, followed by a ceremony and celebration at a public park near the Mekong River. |
